The Imago Dei ministry was birthed out of a desire to be a solution to a growing problem in our community. Though there are hundreds, even thousands, of children with special needs in Middle Tennessee, there are very few churches equipped to minister to them. Many families with children with special needs do not attend church because of the perceived burden of their children and fear of distractions they may cause. We are not okay with this.
At TJC, our Imago Dei ministry stresses that these children are made in the image of God, for the glory of God. They are a part of the body of Christ. We want to minister to these children, as well as their families, to show Jesus as incomparably glorious to them.
We do this through the following ministry endeavors:
- Sunday worship gatherings. Families with children with special needs are invited to come and worship with us on Sunday mornings. We have volunteers who are trained to be with children with special needs as a “buddy” for the morning. They have been equipped and trained for this role. We also have qualified nurses throughout the church.
- Annual Special Needs VBS. Many churches have VBS for children each year. Often these VBS are not prepared to handle children with special needs. Our VBS is especially designed and prepared for children with special needs. We tailor the entire experience to the needs of our children involved and ensure they have an amazing time while learning about Jesus’ love for them.
- Sports Ministry. Many children with special needs have no opportunities to play organized sports. As a solution for this, we offer sports programs including soccer, bowling, t-ball, and other things to give these children a chance to enjoy sports with others.
