Advancing the Kingdom of God

The idea of Advancing the Kingdom can be described as the work of God in which we are participating everyday of our lives.  God’s earthly Kingdom is always with us.  No matter what, God’s Kingdom is always advancing toward His appointed time for His Heavenly Kingdom to replace all that we know that exists in this earthly realm. Here is a quandary, we are told to seek the Kingdom and then told that God’s Kingdom is not of this world.

Notice these Scriptures:  Matthew 6:33 – But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.  Mark 1:15 – And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.  John 18:36 – Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

We are called to personally seek the Kingdom, to personally speak about the Kingdom, and to share that the Kingdom is not here on this earth.  We all face these perplexing Scriptural truths and at times feel we are in a quandary as to how to really be a part of God’s Advancing Kingdom.

The Journey Church started from 10-12 people praying over ten years ago. Then a core group of people started meeting in preparation of launching a church.  Now we have grown to 750 people attending and growing weekly.  It could be very easy to see ourselves as great workers, doing great things for God and building a very large church for Him.  But the truth is, all of this will someday cease.  We should not be creating a great place of worship as if that is the Will of God alone.  It is not and that is why we have what seems to be a conundrum in the Scriptures previously quoted.  Our servant-hood is wrapped up in following his calling to Build His Spiritual Kingdom here, realizing that the physical will perish, but the eternal Kingdom is forever.

There is no quandary to the paradox when one sees the truth of the Scriptures we have read. Three things keep us on the right path of working in the Kingdom of God and not building great churches to admire or to say “look at what we have accomplished”.  These three things are:

1.) Seek his Kingdom personally by reading the Word, Praying, and Serving Him daily.

2.) Keep in mind that there is a day coming when all will stand before God and give account of their lives.  With that in mind, we should be calling others to give their lives to Christ.

3.) Remember the Kingdom to come is the one we are walking towards. Though we live on this planet, the earth will some day pass away and the new heavens and earth will become the Glorious Kingdom of our God where you and I will live eternally with Him.

If we can grasp hold of the Truth that the Kingdom of God is advancing through His people who are serving Him in all aspects of our lives, living as examples to the lost while keeping our eyes on the Kingdom to come, yet building temporal places of worship along the way, then we will recognize our places of worship as simply places of rest and strengthening and not as monuments of achievements as we continually serve Him on the road to His Heavenly Kingdom.  As we serve our Father, let us keep in mind the words of Paul the Apostle,  “Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” Philippians.3:13-14
