If you were away from us at The Journey Church this past weekend here is what you missed:
As we enter our third week of our MY Year series we will be preaching over the 12 spiritual formation markers that we want our church to abide by. The third spiritual formation we talked about this past weekend was:
A relentless devotion to making Christ the center of home life
Every Christian should desire their homes to be an outpost for the Kingdom of God. As we navigate throughout this fallen world, which is filled with death, darkness, hatred, and lies, our homes should be clear of all of these things. Christian homes should be a breath of fresh air, a fragrance that reminds the soul of the preciousness of Christ. This fragrance cannot be manufactured or sprayed on but can only be produced by the out-pouring of ones heart.
What is in the center of your heart?
The answer to what is the center of your heart will determine if Christ is the center of your home life. Christ will not have first place in your home if He does not have first place in your heart. The duty of the Christian is to fight in the power of the Holy Spirit to make sure He maintains His rightful position. In this fight we will fail again and again but Christ will pick up our slack. But we must fight! He will not fight for us, He will fight with us. This gives us all the confidence we need to assure Christ as the center of our hearts. Once this happens, we should expect to see Christ’s kingdom reigning in our home life.
Markers of Christ being the center of your home
•Joy in the home
•Prayer in the home
•Serving and humility
•Worship-singing and reading scripture
•Love – sacrificially
•Grace- are people getting treated better than they deserve
•Orderly- God is not a God of Chaos
•Peace- if you have to leave your house there isn’t peace
•Hospitality- laughter, eating with others
•God’s word as the center of decision making
•Commitment to a local church
•Encouragement not gossip
Cannot staple fruit on a tree
Remember, the fruit of the Spirit cannot be manufactured within oneself. They are not check list materials in order to please God but life giving actions that come from God. If Christ has His place in the center of your heart, He will have His place in the center of your homes. Let us mimic Joshua as he proclaimed
‘But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord .” ‘
